Fraudsters target real estate agents because agents know when closings are coming — and clients trust them. A compromised agent inbox can lead to a buyer’s down payment, a seller’s proceeds, or even a commission check being redirected.
Secure your own accounts
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for email, MLS, transaction management, and banking.
- Use a password manager and unique passwords.
- Avoid sending sensitive documents as open email attachments; use secure portals.
- Check email forwarding rules regularly — attackers often add hidden rules.
Educate buyers at contract
The best time to warn a buyer is the day the contract is signed, not the day before closing. Tell them in writing and in person:
- The title company will never change wire instructions by email.
- Always call the title company at a number from its website before sending money.
- Call you immediately if anything looks unusual.

Protect commissions
Commission redirection scams use fake brokerage emails asking the title company to send commissions somewhere new. Sure Title verifies any change to disbursement instructions by phone with the brokerage using known contact information.
Work with a title company that takes security seriously
Sure Title uses Closinglock identity verification, secure wire instructions, and digital earnest money, and keeps communication inside Qualia instead of open email.
